Thanksgiving 2007 protest over utility shut-off policy

arrow Keep the pressure on the legislature between now and Labor Day — Call your State Representative and Senator to ask for their support for Affordable Energy Legislation (H-6079 and S-490) so folks living on incomes below 150% federal poverty (mostly elderly, children & disabled) won't suffer through basic utility shut-offs.

arrow Thank you for helping us reach and surpass our 5,000 signatures goal on the Affordable Energy petition. The House Finance Committee held a hearing; We need a vote in September 2009.

arrow The Public Utilities Commission agreed on Wednesday July 15th to establish a 10-person panel to study the Termination Rules for residential electric and gas service. Thousands of low- and middle-income households are impacted by these rules which make it increasingly hard for people who are struggling to keep their utilities. Other states have kinder policies for families struggling to pay the bills. We need Rhode Island's rules to be flexible, fair and considerate to those in ill-health, in their “golden years” or in financial difficulties.
