Wiley Center will hold its 8th annual fundraiser October 28th at the Pawtucket Armory Center for the Arts, from 6:00 – 9:00 pm.
If you think Halloween is SCARY, imagine having no electricity!

The event benefits community organizing to end hunger and utility shut-offs. Tickets are $50, with advance reservations encouraged. There will be a silent auction with many items from Rhode Island retailers & crafters, musical entertainment by Celtic folk artist Phil Edmonds, a dinner buffet catered by More Than a Meal and a beer and wine bar.

Demand for a Medical Emergency Restoration of Service
Disabled Abuse — by National Grid and Rhode Island PUC

A disabled couple (ages 57 and 54) burn candles to see in the evening. The husband is a man with severe heart disease and cancer. His wife, who is now running out of money for buying candles, called Henry Shelton this morning and asked that he say to the PUC, “please let my husband die in dignity” and restore our electricity.

Empowering Low-Income Women to Become Advocates for Social Justice

With a grant from the Women’s Fund of Rhode Island, the George Wiley Center is enrolling women in a hands-on, small group training program designed to teach them how to speak up and defend their rights when facing problems that go along with poverty, such as utility shut-offs, food stamp certification, FIP benefits, etc.

MetLife Foundation Awards Volunteer Ventures Grant

MetLife Foundation recently awarded a Volunteer Ventures grant of $1,000 to the George Wiley Center in support of a project to translate information on utility consumer rights and “how to prevent utility shut-offs” into Spanish, Portuguese and Chinese for print and electronic distribution.
