FOX AGREES TO MEETING WITH WILEY LEADERS

Press Release: June 30, 2010
Contact:  Maggi Rogers (401)419-0389

Three weeks of informational picketing outside Gordon Fox's law office paid off on Wednesday, when Speaker Fox finally agreed to meet with members of the George Wiley center about affordable energy legislation that was left for dead in committee (H7816). Before entering his office, George Wiley members and others stood on the street outside his office, passing out fliers and talking with passersby about outrageous utility costs.

After handing out many fliers and standing outside for nearly an hour, the protesters went into Fox's office to request a meeting. "One of our members pointed out that your website (http://gordonfox.com/) talks about how you have lowered energy prices, but in truth you are just raising them!" member Maggi Rogers told Fox. His response was, "I haven't updated that website in four or five years!"

Learning that some people have $13,000 dollars or more in overdue utility bills, Fox asked how such arrearages could be paid off. He was informed that all ratepayers already bear that burden, and that the sensible solution would be to actually create an affordable energy fund.

The meeting will be scheduled for sometime next week.

Mr. Speaker, Your Pants are on Fire!

FROM GORDON FOX'S WEBSITE:

"(Fox) also drafted ground breaking energy legislation which will increase the state's investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency and provide for greater ratepayer input.  The legislation also creates the Affordable Energy Fund that will provide discounted electricity and heat to low-income households."

The truth is:

Speaker Fox pushed through two pieces of legislation - Deepwater and decoupling -- that will significantly raise utility rates.

The George Wiley Center -- and people across the state who are struggling to pay for their utilities -- would like to know:

WHAT AFFORDABLE ENERGY FUND?
